Increase The Value Of Your Home With Easy DIY Projects For Little (Or No) Money

One of the questions I get very often is how do you increase the value of your home with small DIY projects that don't cost a fortune or require specialized skills.

The good news: It  is much easier and cheaper than you think. This goes for natural DIY-ers as well as those less handy.

The key to remember is that you don't have to do 100% of the project yourself. You can handle the part of a project you are comfortable with and leave the more complicated parts to professionals. This way you will save money on the items you did yourself.

I want to share with you my personal experience. During this time of quarantine due to COVID, I have taken advantage and started a few projects. Some will increase the value of the home while others are just to customize the home to our family's taste.

Let's start at the Kitchen: One of the key parts of any house.

Refinishing builder grade cabinets

This is a very easy task, and rather inexpensive as well. Personally, I like dark cabinets, but the process is the same.

There are different approaches for this. I will encourage you to remove doors and drawers, remover and remove the hardware before you start. If they are a bit dirty, wipe them off with an all purpose cleaner before you start.

Before I started this project I did a little research and YouTube tutorials are your best friend here. I knew sanding everything down was going to be tedious, so I found a Deglosser (a liquid that you apply on the surfaces to remove the lacquer.) Now this would work well if you are going from a light to dark, or light to light tone. It removes the hassle of sanding everything down.

After you wipe off, you are set to apply a new coat of paint or finish.Or you can sand everything down to 120 grit sandpaper and you are set to apply a new coat of paint or finish.I personally did both techniques in my kitchen and turned out great. I spent less than $100 and for a kitchen with over 20 doors and drawers.

Before and after Pictures

You can also avoid doing all this and just replace the hardware if outdated. Remember, Kitchen and Baths is where you get the most bang for your buck.

In the video below you can see a more through explanation.
